The Barbell: A Story of Convergent Evolution
Rogue didn’t invent the barbell; they refined its production and revolutionized its global accessibility, reaching more people than any company before them. The barbell we can now order with a few clicks from Rogue is the culmination of centuries of innovation across cultures, reflecting humanity’s universal pursuit of strength. From the stone weights of Ancient Egypt and Vikings ultimately to the steel barbells standardized for Olympic lifting,1 the barbell’s journey represents a form of convergent evolution—independent societies solving the same problem in similar ways.
Humanity has always been captivated by the pursuit of physical strength, a fascination that led to the creation of the sport of Olympic Weightlifting. This sport in particular sparked a chain of events that brought the steel barbell into prominence, dating back to 1854.2 Yet, when we dive deeper into the barbell’s origin story, its historical context and intent, we are compelled to ask an important question as strength practitioners in 2024:
Is relying solely on the steel barbell the best approach for training the modern athlete?
Our answer is no.

Growth is the Answer
While the steel barbell remains a cornerstone in Absolute’s training arsenal, we remain open to innovation—and strive to be drivers of it. Training strategies that were considered rule-of-thumb a decade ago are now being questioned, as they should be. As the pace of information accelerates, even the traditional steel barbell has become a subject of innovation, and we welcome this evolution.
At Absolute, we adhere to the ethos of functioning at the very edge of chaos—because that’s the phase space where innovation emerges from. Growth is the solution to the physical development problems limiting progress in sport, which, in turn, drives stagnation in the modern athlete.3 We believe that to overcome these constraints, we, as strength practitioners, must grow our way out of the problem. With this intent in mind, we present our insights—skin-in-the-game research—on the limiting constraints of the steel barbell.
Absolute’s Research: The Limiting Constraints of the Steel Barbell
Through feedback from the professional athletes under our management—individuals with the highest levels of kinesthetic intelligence—combined with training outcomes, we’ve uncovered an uncomfortable truth: while the steel barbell is an invaluable tool, it is not without its limitations.
These limitations become apparent when the steel barbell is utilized in isolation. The static resistance and resonance intrinsic to the steel barbell drives biological accommodation at the connective tissue and joint levels, which eventually leads to neurological stagnation. Despite leveraging insights of legendary strength coaches like Perlipen, Verkhoshansky, Medvedev, and Simmons guiding our optimization of resistance, volume, and frequency, stagnation and accommodation rear their ugly heads.
This reality is most evident when training for the neurological components of Point B—specifically in developing the neurological network of absolute strength and the subsequent training of speed-strength. While the steel barbell excels at stimulating neurology, its overuse results in joint and tissue accommodation that inevitably leads to stagnation. Witnessing this accommodation-stagnation cycle unfold in real time is like enduring Chinese water torture for both the athlete and the practitioner, compelling us to seek innovative solutions out of necessity rather than preference—as change can be hard.
The Two-Headed Monster
Our training philosophy is characterized by programming and executing work at the highest level of specificity, guided by our clearly defined Point B across all trainable ecologies for each athlete. This precision allows us to rapidly identify when neurological stagnation and biological accommodation emerge during training.

Biological Accommodation: The static resistance resonates/stimulates to a limited amount of tissue and thus drives accommodation quickly. Over time, this static stimulus leads to tissue accommodation rather than further adaptation, diminishing training returns.
Neurological Stagnation: The steel barbell excels for developing absolute strength by stimulating the nervous system to recruit the largest motor units and fastest muscle fibers. But over-reliance on this barbell’s resonance often results in the nervous system becoming “bored,” leading to stagnation due to static resistance.
Communication: Bottom Up Athlete Feedback Compresses A-S Loop
One of our most effective means for combating this two-headed monster of stagnation and accommodation is our ongoing communication with the athlete. By maintaining a continuous feedback loop, we ensure that athletes understand the intent behind every training input and take responsibility for providing bottom-up feedback on whether the intended training outcomes are being achieved.
This dynamic feedback loop—combining bottom-up insights from the athlete with our top-down programming intent—enables us to manage training and treatment work at the edge of chaos, where innovation thrives and new adaptations emerge. It is through this process that we have been led to explore barbells that generate more variable resistance, resonating with the tissue and joint ecologies in a way that mitigates the accommodation-stagnation cycle.
Evolving Beyond the Steel Barbell
To address these limitations, we’ve integrated alternative barbells into our training arsenal. Innovative barbells like the Bandbell offer dynamic resistance, introducing variability that resonates with a broader range of tissue and joint ecologies. This variability combats accommodation and stimulates new adaptations.
By pairing these alternative barbells with traditional steel barbells, we’ve created a conjugate system4 that leverages the strengths of both barbells for the athlete. The steel barbell provides the foundation for developing absolute strength and serves as a benchmark for the loading parameters of programming. Once these metrics are established, we wave and transition athletes to dynamic barbells to sustain progress and avoid accommodation-stagnation.
The Absolute Strategy: Bandbell and Steel Barbell in Conjugation
At Absolute, we believe that progress lies at the intersection of tradition and innovation. The evolution of the barbell reflects humanity’s enduring pursuit of strength, but we recognize that the tools (i.e., steel barbell only) that brought us to this point in time, are no longer suffice enough to propel the modern athlete to be in a position to generate higher levels of performance while simultaneously enhancing their resilience to tissue specific injury at the level of competition—a billion-dollar challenge, as evidenced by the NFL alone.5
Our strategy involves using the steel barbell for its unparalleled ability to develop absolute strength. Once we’ve extracted its benefits for that ecology of Point B, we transition athletes to innovative barbells like the Bandbell, which provides variable resistance that stimulates connective tissues and joint ecologies more comprehensively.
Rethinking Load: Dynamic or Static?
This approach challenges strength practitioners to rethink how resistance—an element of 'load'—is applied. In conversations with Jim Seitzer, the innovator behind Bandbell, we’ve learned that dynamic barbells evolve far more rapidly than traditional steel barbells. While it took nearly a century to refine the steel barbell into its modern Olympic form, Seitzer introduces new iterations of dynamic barbells every few months, each designed to meet specific training demands.
In understanding internal strength training and the maxim of load, we can see that having the option between dynamic and static resistance unlocks a range of new training stimuli. This allows us strength practitioners to program and execute training strategies that not only better stimulate certain elements of Point B but also to augment and enhance tissue specific behaviors while the athlete is already at Point B—exciting times!
